Guitar Hero

Finn likes music. I mean, he really likes music. From the time he was a little baby, he has seemed to be drawn to music, and since he became mobile, first by rolling, and then by crawling, he has moved towards whatever the source of music happens to be in our house. He's definitely his daddy's boy; Michael is a talented musician and has clearly passed his affinity for music to Finn (as well as some of the other kids).

Finn especially seems to like the guitar. Here he is playing with Daddy tonight:

Now, this seems significant to me in several ways. First of all, check out those fine motor skills! Also, he seems to be trying to mimic Daddy. And it seems to me that there is some pretty impressive cognition going on here: I think a lot of babies would just happily bang on the body of the guitar. But Finn seems to get that in order to get that sound he likes so much, you have to pluck the strings.

I'm not saying this means my kid must be a genius or anything, but look: he's engaged. He's found something that gives him pleasure and he's figured out how to manipulate it to make it do what he wants it to do. I think this is pretty meaningful.

I agree. Mimicking is a great thing. Luke mimics me heaps. I think Finn IS a genius :)

Totally agree...I noticed those perfect little fingers moving, how attentive and alert Finn was and how engaged he was for sure. Not to mention mimicking, which was a good milestone for us, too. And yes, I think that my almost 16-months old twins would have just banged on that thing!!!

aww. how stinkin' cute! Syd loves music too...but totally would have just hit it instead of trying to pluck the strings. she must be a drummer, lol.

Pretty great, Finn. Love seeing your little fingers working like that. That's my kinda guitar hero... the real kind, not the air guitar. Keep it up!

As well as fine motor skills that's some impressive attention span! So proud of you, Finnian!
