Hearts and Ears

Thought I'd document for posterity that Finn had an appointment with the pediatric cardiologist this morning. He's had a small ASD since birth, but it was so small last January when he had his last echo that they decided he didn't need to be seen for another year. Well, now it's been a year, so I took him in this morning, first for an echocardiogram, and then to meet with the cardio doc. I thought he was a really good patient for the echo - I held him on my lap and he was pretty darn cooperative. But I guess even the smallest amount of wiggling can throw it off, so I was told by the sonographer that she wasn't able to get the best images. Anyway, the doc said that from what he could see, the ASD is either closed now, or very, very small. He said he'd like to be able to definitively document that it's closed, but he can't based on the images they got today, so he wants Finn to have another echo in six months. Which is fine.

Phew. This really and truly is NOT something I spend any time worrying about. Finn's in excellent health, and has never shown any signs of problems resulting from a heart defect.

In other news, remember that cyst that Finn had removed from the back of his ear last month? It's back. I discovered it a couple weeks ago. Yeesh. I mean, it's apparently not anything to be concerned about health-wise, but still, he's got this hard lump on the back of his ear! I can't see putting him through another outpatient surgery to have it removed again. I don't know. We see our regular pediatrician in a couple weeks for his 18-month well baby checkup, so I guess I'll see what he thinks.

Great news on the heart front- Luke is very similar. Bummer about the cyst- check out ds-health.com. Apparently common for people with Ds.

Good news about the ASD. Yusef also has one and we'll be having our year checkup in March *fingers crossed*. As for the cyst, interestingly, I also have one behind my ear and my doc. said the bad thing about removing cysts is that they often times reappear.
