Things that make me go "Hmmmm . . ."

Eun, Finn's PT, has not been here since the first week of December. She said that she would call after the first of the year to schedule our next PT session. It's now two weeks into the new year and I have yet to hear from her. I'm not sure how much I care. There is a part of me that is irritated because I appreciate it when people do what they say they're going to do, and hence, do not appreciate it when they don't follow through. (And now that I'm posting about it, she's sure to call. You know how that works.) There's also a part of me that is bothered because I kind of get the feeling that maybe Eun has given up on us. As in, I'm the mom who insisted on reducing therapy to once a month, and I'm the mom who refuses to push Finn to the point that he cries, so what's the point? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe she has a perfectly valid reason for not having called us. And I guess I could call her, but you know what? I don't want to. He's due for his IFSP eval next month, so I guess I'll be hearing from her sooner or later.

I sense that Finn is on the brink of something. I notice subtle things lately, like he's becoming more frustrated when he can't reach a toy he wants up on a table. I think the motivation to stand is finally beginning to take root. He's not standing yet without help, but I get the feeling he's thinking about it.

His babbling seems to have become more meaningful lately, too. No words still, but he's definitely become more expressive with his babbling, with different facial expressions and the cadence and intonation of his voice, like he's trying to get some point across. Sometimes it appears that he's trying to mimic one of us singing.

It's fascinating and wondrous to watch these baby steps, to watch it all unfold so slowly and meaningfully.

Sounds like Finnian is making leaps and bounds all over the place with wanting to stand and all of his babbling. How exciting. My therapist once told me that getting a little frustrated can be good. Meaning that by him being frustrated to try and reach something that he is motivated. It shows that he is trying and wants to do it. I am not sure what to tell you about your therapist. Maybe you can get a new one if you don't connect with this one that you have. Mmm yes weird that she hasn't called. Maybe she just forgot to write it down.

Did she call yet? LOL That is the way it happens isn't it?

Finn is on Finn's schedule and I think that's perfectly acceptable. There will always be babies who do things faster than him, and babies who do things slower than him. And watching it all unfold on his terms is wondrous. :o)

Moon the Magical Fairy will pop up right before the meeting, watch, all ready to "evauluate" Finn. *gag*

My evaulation: He's doing wonderfully and he's downright fabulous.

So when should we schedule this temporary baby swap? ;-)

Hi Lisa,

I wanted to tell you that Summer has shunned her PT. She turns her back to her EVERY time she comes (Friday mornings). At first it was funny but now it is... well putting me in a position of having to decide if watching Summer blow off her PT is useful to her overall development.

As tough as things have sometimes been with PT, and PT is always the roughest of the EI train, our PT has always found ways to work with Summer and us to give positive and helpful input. For example, she is teaching her how to get down off her (very low) bench and her rolling pony.

So where I am going with this is that maybe you need a new PT, because from what I can see, it isn't about pushing our kids to crawl or walk. It is about teaching them strategies for how to move their bodies effectively. And it is about teaching us how to arrange toys/games to help encourage certain movements. For example, instead of placing Summer's toys in front of her, I place them to the side so that she will twist and reach to get them, thereby strengthening her core. I would not have known to do this if not for our PT.

It seems like you may have lots of good reasons for a new PT. I doubt Eun could just forget to call you... that is too weird. I look forward to seeing how this all turns out.
