Something else to be stressed out about

During Finn's PT this morning, Moon the Magical Fairy informed me that if the State of California doesn't pass a budget in the next couple of weeks, Regional Center (the state-funded agency that provides services to Finn until age 3) will close its doors and Finn (as well as, obviously, millions of other babies and children) will be without services. It pretty much took everything I had not to just start crying on the spot. We are dealing with enough stress right now (which I can't discuss). One more thing is going to send me right to the breaking point.

I guess I would have seen this coming if I read newspapers and such, but I don't because all the news is just too depressing these days. So it's my own fault for getting blindsided by this. We can't afford to pay for therapy for Finn out of our own pockets, so I don't know what we would do.

I went to the Regional Center website to see if I could get some specific info, and here it is. Maybe not quite as bleak as I first thought. My impression when Eun first told me this was that it would be permanent, but apparently they would only close their doors until a budget was passed. And with how long the state government has already been dicking around with it, who knows how long that might be.

Ack.

I am so sorry, Lisa. I hope something is resolved before you have any interruption of therapy. Do you use any of the series of books for kids with Ds...there are different ones for gross motor, fine motor, communication, etc? Anyway, it's totally not the same as having a therapist, but much of our gross/fine motor therapy follows the same recommendations as in those books. {hugs}

Ugh! I wish I had some idea what to do...but just know I'm thinking of you. (And good luck with the sleeping too...I understand!)

Dang! Not cool. I second the idea to get some of the books. I have the gross motor one, and it follows a lot of what we do in PT. It will all work out, sounds like you have bigger things to worry about right now. ((hugs))

Is nothing sacred in this cruddy economy? I hope the state gets it's stuff together quickly. Take care with the other stuff... I sympathize that some things are not for the blog. Take care!

I used to work for a large state agency and every year we went through this threat at budget time- and they always worked it out sooner or later. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Hope everything else works out too!

I've been lurking here for a few months. I saw something this morning and thought you might enjoy it. If you missed the Today Show this morning (thurs.) be sure to go to their website and look at the story about Patrick, a high school senior with Ds. It made me all teary, in a good way. Here's the link http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/29030653#29030653

Hang in there. It seems like you're doing a great job.
