What's this???

Okay, I do NOT want to go borrowing trouble. But I've noticed something new and strange about Finn recently. His eyes will kind of roll back, almost like he's looking at the ceiling, but without moving his head, and he seems a little . . . vacant. I've only noticed it maybe three or four times over the last few days, and each time it's lasted no more than a second or two. Somewhere in the back of my mind, when I've noticed it I've been slightly concerned, but not terribly. But this afternoon, Michael noticed Finn doing it - just for a second. I hadn't even mentioned it to him, but he saw it and described to me exactly what I have noticed and he even said "It's like he wasn't there for a second or two."

Now I'm a little scared, now that both of us have notice the same exact thing. Could this be seizure activity?? This is one of my greatest fears for some reason. I know nobody who reads this can tell me anything definitive, but I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar with their own child.

Yusef has infantile spasms which present a little differently. It definitely sounds like seizure activity to me and I'd get him in for an EEG asap. I remember Christie's son from http://taylorvillethree21.blogspot.com/ was having similar episodes and it did turn out to be a form of epilepsy. You might contact her if she doesn't respond here. Best wishes.

Hi, I have no experience but I do know the mom of all moms who has had a boat load of experience in the seizure dept. I know she would love to answer any questions. You might even already follow her. Her name is Heather. http://littlewonders-heather.blogspot.com/
Good luck. Please post to keep us update on your sweet Finn.

I have two friends that have boys with DS who also have IS. Both of them described the same thing you just described. I would definitely get it checked out, just in case. Hugs!

I'm so sorry, Lisa, that there is always something to worry about..not just you, all of us Mommies. I hope that this will turn out to be nothing serious. Please keep us posted, if you can. Sweet little Finn...

Definitely sounds like seizure activity. I'd make an appt and stay FAR AWAY from Google in the meantime. (easier said than done, I know.)

That sounds like the seizures my son has, HOWEVER - it could also be nastagmus. In addition to neuro, I would also ask about getting a thyroid panel. Low thyroid levels can cause this too. In the mean time, you might want to try to get a video of it if you can. That way the doctor can really see what is going on, 'cause you know it NEVER happens when the docs are standing there. LOL! Sending good thoughts & prayers your way.

Hugs Lisa...I'm sure you are needing them right now. I always get panicked when I "see" something new and unusual. Take a deep breath. We have such good medical care in the States...thank God for that! He'll be in excellent hands. Kisses to Finn!

my son did that too at that age. get him checked just to be safe but i think a lot of kids do that and many times it is not seizure related.

Lisa,
It may very well be nothing but it does sound very similar to my nephew who it turns out was having seizures. Please KUP and (((HUGS)))

Definately get it checked out. I recommend connecting with Amy Armstrong. Her daughter Larkin had IS and then LG and she knows a lot about this. You can find her at http://www.larkinsplace.com/. Hugs to you.

Cael has IS and it does not sound anything like what he has. (Hope that makes you feel better!) He was diagnosed at 15 months, btw and he flopped forward. He had all sorts of weird jerks, arm stretches, eye rolling, etc. and none of them were seizures. They all stopped too when we put him on a cocktail of reflux meds. We had no idea Cael had reflux even.

First off... hi there long lost blogging friend... I've been gone for a long time.

Sydney started doing something similar for a few weeks and it totally freaked me out. She would look up with her eyes as far as she could, then shaked her head slowly back and forth like she was saying NO-no-no-no. She would be totally engrossed in this activity, then just stop and move along. I was completely panicked, asked the doctor, ECI and OT. No one had and answer and after a week or two she just stopped and didn't do it again. I think in her case she just thougth it was fun. I hope all is well with Finn

Just a thought - maybe you can speak to your OT friend, she would know if it's a sensory-seeking behaviour or not.
Malakai also does it sometimes, and it freaked me out a bit. But I reckon that if he's developing well it can't be IS (which severely affects development, I believe).
If you find anything out, please let us know!
